Che Cafe Recommendation Report
To: UCAB
From: Cruz Salas
Subject: Che Cafe Fund Cut and Shut down
The Che Cafe is the home of many local and non local shows, open mic nights, movie nights, and other events. I know the Che Cafe is not up to fire and safety standards and needs a lot of money for repairs but I will show you why they are worth the repairs and more. In this report I will talk about the criteria of:
1. Repairs needed and why UCSD campus should fund it
2. Concerts/Open Mic No Mic Nights
3. Movie nights
Discussion
With hundreds of shows, movie nights, open mic no mic, and other events held at the Che for students and the youth in San Diego County it would be a big loss to the community and the San Diego music scene since the Che is a kind of historical venue and a lot of bands pass through there on tour.
Concerts/Shows:
If you were to take out The Che Cafe there would be no money generated through shows and concerts from local or signed bands which would mean less people coming through the campus and less money coming through. Also San Diego only has three music venues The Che, Epicentre, and Soma so you take one and there goes almost half of the music scene.
Movie nights:
They are held around once a week at the Che where students of UCSD can come relax, hang out, and meet more people helping the student body become more unified and it is just another for people to hang out and have some fun on campus.
Repairs:
Yes The Che Cafe needs a lot of repairs to meet fire and safety code but it is not the students job to raise the money for repairs it is on UCSD campus and the school should fund it but the students could do fund raisers and benefit shows to at least help raise some money to keep their doors open and meet the safety and fire code.
Recommendation
My recommendation is to keep The Che Cafe up and ruining with the school going 50/50 in repairs needed so that they can keep their doors open and the San Diego music scene thriving along with UCSD student body and community.
Conclusion
The Che Cafe is the place of the UCSD community and San Diego music scene. It is a legendary venue, chill spot, and just all around building on the campus it would be a shame not only to our music scene but to the campus itself if it shut down. It would be best if it were to be kept open and repairs were split equally between UCSD and student body who supports The Che Cafe.
